Association for Tourism In Higher Education Annual Conference 2009

Destination Learning attended the Association for Tourism in Higher Education's ( ATHE) Annual conference. This year the Conference took place at Losehill Hall Peak Districk National Park Study Centre. ATHE has a number of objectives including:

To act as the subject Association for tourism in higher education in the UK

To encourage high standards in learning, teaching and research

To maintain links between education on the one hand and employers and other interested bodies on the other

The conference was well attended with over 50 delegates in attendance from over 30 different HE institutions from across the UK and further afield. Insitutions from Beguim, Nepal, Croatia and South Africa attended the 3 day conference.

The theme of the conference was entitled - Navigating Shifting Sands and Moving Mountains: New Paradigms for Tourism and Tourism Education?

Lively debate and discussion ensued throughout the conference. One of the highlights of the conference was a panel session on the topic of " Tourism Policy,Politics and the role of Higher Education". The panel included Rt Hon Richard Caborn MP, Tom Levitt MP, Dr Keven Nield, Sheffield Business School and Dr Cathy Guthrie, Secretary of Tourism Management Institute.
